20,000 reasons we can’t ignore wounds any longer: Insights from the UK's largest ever wound database

Session Supported by Smith+Nephew

  • Wounds are a growing, silent epidemic – affecting over 3.8 million people annually in the UK alone, with prevalence and complexity rising year on year.
  • Wound patients are clinically complex but systemically invisible – they often fall between service lines, with no clear ownership at ICS level, no central tracking, and limited representation in performance metrics or strategic planning.
  • The system is under strain and underprepared – fragmented services, inconsistent pathways, and data blind spots are leading to preventable harm and missed opportunities for early healing.
